Summer and year-round life: paths, services, food

Summer in Sappada weighs more than winter, and it is spent on the paths. But a house is also used in November: that is why, beside the mountain huts, we list the pharmacy, the school, the nearest hospital and what the village does not have.

In brief

  • Summer accounts for 54.9% of the year's tourist stays; August alone records 28,440.
  • It is a cool summer: in July the mean maximum is 21.4 °C and the mean minimum 9.8 °C. And a wet one: on average 14.9 rainy days in the month.1
  • You walk from the valley floor to the huts: the Laghi d'Olbe, the sources of the Piave, the Calvi hut at 2,164 m.23
  • The village has a pharmacy, a doctor, a post office and schools up to age fourteen. It has no hospital: the nearest are about 50 min and about 70 min away.6
  • There are 1,320 residents. In the shoulder months, which account for 4.3% of stays, the village slows down a great deal.

Summer means walking

People who come to Sappada in summer come for the walking. The network of paths starts from the hamlets and climbs to the huts; the classic destinations can be reached without equipment, with boots and a little fitness.

Four destinations on foot
DestinationWhat it isHow to get there
Laghi d'Olbe3 small lakes of glacial origin on the plateau above the villageOn foot from the valley floor in about three hours; less when the Sappada 2000 lift is running
Sources of the PiaveThe place where the river rises, at the foot of the PeralbaBy car from Cima Sappada along the Val Sesis road, open in the summer months
Calvi hutHut of the Sappada section of the Italian Alpine Club at 2,164 m, opened on 26 September 1926About an hour's walk from the Val Sesis car park; open from June to September
Val Sesis hutsFour huts along the valleyAlso for those who walk little

Indicative times from the route descriptions: in the mountains they depend on fitness and conditions.23

The summits are another matter. The Peralba, 2,694 m, is the highest, and cannot be seen from the hamlets: it lies behind the first ridge. Its routes, like those of the Siera and the Terze, include via ferratas and stretches for experienced hikers: they are not strolls.2

The air is that of a high valley. In July the maximum temperature averages 21.4 °C, and at night it drops to around 9.8 °C. The other side of the coin is rain: afternoon thunderstorms are frequent, and July and August are among the wettest months of the year.1

The drawbacks of summer

  • Only one lift. In summer 2026 only the Monte Siera chairlift ran, from July to early September. The Sappada 2000 one stayed closed for the works on the new installation: people walked up to the Laghi d'Olbe, in about three hours from the valley floor.3
  • The season at altitude is short. The high huts open from June to September, and the Val Sesis road is open in the summer months.
  • Cycling is not the headline product. The regional tourism agency lists neither a bike park nor mountain bike routes here; bikes and e-bikes can be hired in the village.
  • Dolomites yes, UNESCO heritage no. The mountains to the south are dolomite in rock and form, but no Sappada summit lies in any of the 9 systems of the UNESCO Dolomites.8

Who lives here all year

Sappada has 1,320 residents, and 30.1% are over sixty-five. In 2001 there were 1,356: over a quarter of a century the population has fallen only slightly, because arrivals largely make up for departures.

Around them stands a village built for many more. 76.5% of dwellings are not occupied by residents, and stays are concentrated in two seasons. April, May, October and November together account for 4.3% of the year's stays: in those months some of the hotels, restaurants and shops close.

For a buyer this is information, not a flaw. Those looking for quiet find it precisely then; those who picture working from here in November need to know what they will find open.

On heating, what we write in every guide applies: climate zone F, no mains natural gas, a piped LPG network, then firewood, pellets, heating oil and heat pumps.7

On internet connection we have no reliable figure. The national ultra-broadband database shows the public fibre works as “being tested”, without saying whether the network can already be sold: coverage should be checked for the exact address, with a provider, before buying.9

The food

For a village of this size, food is a serious subject. There is 1 restaurant with one star in the 2026 Michelin Guide, in one of the hamlets of Sappada Vecchia, and a second restaurant listed by the same guide.4

The local product is saurnschotte, a fresh cheese flavoured with tarragon, which has a Slow Food Presidium.5

Festivals and leisure

The festival that defines the village is in winter: Carnival, with its three Sundays and the Rollate mask. At the end of September comes the return of the cows from the alpine pastures, with brass bands; in 2026 it is announced for the 26th and 27th.

The village has a golf course with 9 holes, a short one. Sappada Vecchia is on the list of Italy's Most Beautiful Villages, and the municipality holds the Orange Flag of the Touring Club Italiano.10

What we do

When a house is of interest, we advise coming back to see it off season, and we say so even if it lengthens the process. In our listings we state the walking distance from the hamlet's services; on the mountains pages you will find the destinations in this guide one by one.

What we do not know yet

Whatever we have not yet read in a reliable source is written here, rather than passed off as certain.

  • Whether fibre can already be activated in homes: the public record says “being tested” and is not up to date.
  • The opening hours of the village's bank sub-branch.
  • Which control centre currently answers medical emergency calls from Sappada.
  • When the Sappada 2000 lift will reopen in summer.

Frequently asked questions

Can you live in Sappada all year round?

Yes, 1,320 people do. The basic services are there; the hospital and upper secondary schools are missing, and in the shoulder seasons many businesses are closed.

Where is the nearest hospital?

In Pieve di Cadore, about 50 min by car, and in Tolmezzo, about 70 min. These are estimated times, without snow.

Do the lifts run in summer?

In 2026 only the Monte Siera chairlift ran, for a little over two months. The summer timetable changes every year and should be checked on the operator's website.

Is Sappada in the UNESCO Dolomites?

No. The mountains south of the village are dolomitic in rock and form, but none belongs to the systems recognised by UNESCO: the nearest are a few dozen kilometres away.
