Winter: skiing, cross-country, snow, and what the gondola changes

In winter Sappada is a small ski area inside a real village, with a cross-country trail running below the hamlets and one of the coldest valley floors in the region. Here are the declared figures and the ones you can count, the prices, and what is not yet known.

The falling snow does not come from a video model: it is a particle animation computed locally and laid over the still, which stays identical in every frame; the loop lasts eight seconds and closes on itself. Eight attempts with image-to-video models were discarded: they either returned a still without snow, or moved the camera and redrew the houses.Modelnano_banana_pro · animazione calcolata in locale (nessun modello video)Source photoVolo con drone sopra Borgata Bach, Sappada (voce «conca-da-bach» di questo registro) · TriesteVillasLicenceMateriale proprioDate7 October 2026Its line in the credits

In brief

  • The operator declares 15 km of downhill runs between 1,245 m and 2,024 m; its online list counts 16, for 14 km. The lifts are chairlifts and drag lifts: no gondola today.12
  • For the 2026/27 season the adult day pass costs €55 for those not resident in Friuli Venezia Giulia and €45 for residents. Owning a second home does not give you the residents' rate.3
  • The cross-country trail runs along the valley floor for 13 km, at an altitude of 1,250 m.4
  • The Region has allocated €31,000,000 for a gondola from Kratten to the Sappada 2000 hut and two chairlifts higher up. The opening date has not been confirmed by the operator.5
  • Snowmaking is declared on 100% of the runs: that is not the same as guaranteed snow.

How big it really is

15 kmof downhill runs, according to the operatorBetween 1,245 m and 2,024 m as declared, with a vertical drop of 779 m. The top altitude is the declared one: the lifts in operation today reach a little lower.1

The same operator, in the list it updates daily, reports 16 runs for 14 km and 8 lifts: 5 chairlifts and 3 drag lifts. The difference from the declared figure is small, but we record it. The longest run measures 3,650 m.12

It is a small ski area, and it is best to say so. The lifts start from different points in the valley, from Cima Sappada to Kratten and down to the nursery slopes below Bach, and they do not form a circuit: from one sector to another, in part, you travel by road. In return the runs end in the village, a few minutes from the houses.

The ski area is run by the Region's tourism agency. The ski pass is valid in all the ski areas of Friuli Venezia Giulia; Sappada is not part of Dolomiti Superski.1

The ski pass, and who pays what

From the 2026/27 season the day pass has two prices, according to residence.

Ski pass, 2026/27 season
TicketPriceFor whom
Adult day pass€55Those not resident in Friuli Venezia Giulia
Adult day pass, residents€45Those resident in the region
Day pass, residents of the ski area€28.50Those registered as resident in the ski area's municipalities: a second home is not enough
Seven days€244Single price list
Season pass€550Valid in all the region's ski areas; €495 in the pre-sale

Prices published by the operator for the 2026/27 season: they need re-reading every season.3

For those buying a home here there is one point: the residents' rate follows registered residence, not ownership. Someone who has a second home in Sappada and lives in Veneto, Austria or Germany pays the full day rate. Multi-day and season passes, by contrast, have a single price list; the season pass costs less in the November pre-sale. There are reductions for members of the winter sports federation, with no residence requirement.3

Cross-country and biathlon

For many, the reason for Sappada in winter is not downhill skiing. The cross-country trail extends for 13 km along the valley floor, at 1,250 m, and passes at the foot of many hamlets: from quite a few houses you walk there with your skis on your shoulder.4

A few kilometres away, at Piani di Luzza in the municipality of Forni Avoltri, is the federal biathlon centre, with 10 km of trails and the shooting range. Several Olympic champions in cross-country skiing and biathlon come from Sappada, up to the pursuit gold of February 2026.9

Snow and cold

The valley floor of Sappada is cold: freezing air pools in the basin. The village weather station measures a mean temperature of -3.8 °C in January, and in that month it freezes on average 29.8 nights out of thirty-one. For skiers that is good news: both man-made and natural snow last.6

Then there are the drawbacks. The village is low by today's standards, and most of the runs lie below the altitude that the regional environment agency considers reliable for natural snow. Winters are warming, and the station records it. Snowmaking covers, according to the operator, 100% of the runs: it helps a great deal, but it needs cold and is not a guarantee.7

What the gondola changes

On 23 July 2025 the Region allocated €31,000,000 for a new installation: a gondola from Kratten to the Sappada 2000 hut, and two chairlifts higher up. It replaces lifts that are decades old; in summer 2026 the Sappada 2000 chairlift stayed closed for the works.5

If the project is completed as announced, two things change: you get up high faster and under cover, and the Kratten base becomes the centre of skiing. The land-use plan provides there, between Kratten and Soravia, for the hub linking the lifts, with car parks and services.

Two cautions. The project was first announced in 2022, with a different figure and a different date: public works take longer than planned. And nobody can say today whether, or by how much, the lift will move the prices of nearby homes: anyone buying on that expectation is making a bet, not a calculation.

The season

The lifts open on 5 December 2026 and close on 29 March 2027: these are the announced dates, and they depend on the snow. Winter accounts for 40.8% of the year's tourist stays, concentrated between Christmas, Carnival and the ski weeks.8

Outside those periods the village is quiet, and in December, before the holidays, very quiet.

Winter seen from home

  • The sun. Around the solstice some hamlets lose the midday sun behind the mountains: the guide to choosing a hamlet has the times.
  • Heating. Climate zone F and no mains natural gas: the energy class decides the bill.
  • The car. Covered parking, the gradient of the access, who clears the snow on the private stretch.
  • The road. Winter tyres or chains from 15 November to 15 April, and only two ways in.
  • Distance from the lifts. The sectors are scattered: “near the slopes” needs the question “near which?”.

What we do

In our listings we state the hamlet and the walking distance from the nearest lift and cross-country trail, and we do not write “ski-in, ski-out” unless we have checked it. On the comparison page you will find Sappada beside the other resorts of the region, with the same fields for each.

What we do not know yet

Whatever we have not yet read in a reliable source is written here, rather than passed off as certain.

  • When the gondola will open: the press has given a date “barring the unforeseen”, and the operator has not confirmed it.
  • Which Sappada 2000 lifts will run in winter 2026/27, with the works under way.
  • Between which sectors you can move on skis today and between which you need the car or the bus.
  • How much snow falls in the village: for the valley floor there is no public series of measurements.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sappada part of Dolomiti Superski?

No. It is one of the ski areas of Friuli Venezia Giulia, and the regional ski pass is valid in all of them. Nor do the cross-country trails belong to the Dolomites circuit.

With a second home, do I get the residents' ski pass?

No. The reduced rates follow registered residence, in the region or in the ski area's municipalities. Someone who owns a home but lives elsewhere pays the full rate.

When does the gondola open?

There is no date confirmed by the operator. The funding dates from July 2025 and the works are under way; until there is an official timetable it is unwise to count on it for a particular season.

Is there snow at Christmas?

Nobody can promise that. The valley floor is cold and snowmaking covers the runs, but it takes cold to make snow: in a mild December there is less skiing.
