The detached knoll
Ecche
Ekke in the Sappada dialectHamlet of Sappada
Ecche, Ekke in Plodarisch, stands on a knoll at 1,270 m, in the eastern part of Sappada Vecchia, set apart from the neighbouring hamlets. The sources describe it as very sunny, and that is true for most of the year; in December, according to our calculation, Monte Siera covers its midday. It is the place for those who want quiet and space and do not need shops on the doorstep: the town hall is far away, the lifts a few minutes' walk.

The sun here
Where the sun reaches Ecche from, and when
The ridge line you see is the real one, calculated from the centre of the hamlet. Above it are the sun's paths on the days that matter: where the line is solid the sun is in view, where it is dashed the sun has risen but is still behind the mountain.
On 21 December the sun reaches Ecche at about 10:25 and leaves at about 15:20: about 2 h 50 min of direct sun, under a clear sky.
Move your mouse or finger over the panorama, or use the slider beside it: you can read the direction, the height of the ridge, the peak, and the time the sun passes that way.
In words: from Ecche the highest stretch of ridge lies to the north, 26.4° above the horizon; the lowest to the east, 3.1°. To the south the ridge stands at 21.7°, and at midday on 21 December the sun climbs to 20°. At midday on that day the sun stays behind the ridge. On 21 December it arrives at about 10:25 and leaves at about 15:20; on 21 June it stays in view from roughly 6:25 to 19:25.
Hours of direct sun, month by month
On the 21st of each month, under a clear sky, at the centre of the hamlet. The pale band is the day as it would be without mountains: the difference is what the ridge takes away.

- Across the 81 mapped buildings of the hamlet, direct sun ranges from 1 h 45 min to 3 h 35 min; the mid-point is 2 h 40 min. Here the figure changes a great deal from one house to the next: the range is what counts, not the single point.
- At midday the sun stays behind the ridge from 2 December to 11 January: 41 days a year.
- What hides it longest is the ridge to the south, where Monte Siera stands: about 1 h 30 min.
The peaks in view from Ecche
According to the calculation: at least twenty metres of summit above the terrain in between. A wood or a nearby house can still hide them.

MethodA calculation, not a measurement: terrain model at 10 m, clear sky, the centre of the hamlet with the eye 6 m above the ground. Trees and buildings are not counted; times are rounded to five minutes and, where the sun skims a ridge, they can shift by ten to twenty.
Sources and details of the calculation
Times are Italian local time (summer time from late March to late October), calculated for the year 2027; the sun counts as present when the centre of its disc is above the ridge. On 21 September the sun's path is almost the same as on 21 March, an hour later by the clock. Calculated on 7 October 2026.

What Ecche is like
What kind of place it is
Ekke is the knoll, and that is exactly where the hamlet stands: on a rise beside the small valley of the Puiche stream, among the most detached from its neighbours. You reach it from Soravia along the stretch of road between fences called Zàine. The cluster lies above the regional road, whose stretch lower down bears the same name.
There are few historic buildings, of note: eighteenth-century houses, one of which has remained almost unaltered in its classic form. The hamlet has the small chapel of St Anthony of Padua, from 1930, a niche dedicated to St Notburga, from 1897, and an old pit for processing flax. The most widespread list of the hamlets of Sappada Vecchia includes Ecche; other sources stop at Soravia.
The sun: what the calculation says
Here the sources and the calculation seem to say opposite things, but they are talking about different months. The published descriptions call Ecche “very well exposed to the sun”. Our calculation gives, for 21 December, about 2 h 50 min of direct sun on the hamlet's map point, in two spells: a few minutes in mid-morning, then from early afternoon until about 15:20. In between is Monte Siera, which from here lies exactly to the south: according to the calculation it covers midday from roughly early December to mid-January.
Then the order is reversed. At the end of January Ecche already has more hours of sun than Hoffe or Fontana, in February it is among the first; on 21 March the figure is about 10 h 30 min, on 21 June about 13 h. And the horizon to the east is more open than in the centre: you see Creta Forata and Monte Cimon.
It is a calculation on the terrain model, under a clear sky, without trees or buildings. In Ecche the December result varies a great deal from one house to the next, because the sun skims the ridge: it should be checked on site, in those days.
The houses, and what comes up for sale
Historic timber houses, a few, and next to them more recent buildings. In the listings we read in October 2026 there is a small new-build development, with several houses of a few apartments each: the energy class and completion date in a listing are statements by the seller.
Lower down, by the Piave, the land-use plan identifies the site of a former crushing plant: it can be built on only after flood-safety works. This is information for anyone looking at a house in the lower part.
For the Italian Revenue Agency Ecche is in the “peripheral” zone, the historic part: standard homes between €1,900/m2 and €2,700/m2 (OMI, normal condition, gross floor area). It is a range estimated on completed sales, not the price of a house, and it does not describe new builds.
On foot from here
There are no shops in the hamlet. The nearest food shops are in Fontana or Cima Sappada; the town hall, post office and pharmacy are in Bach, and on foot they are far. The Sappada 2000 and Pian dei Nidi chairlifts can be reached in a few minutes' walk, the cross-country trail is on the level ground below the hamlet. On the valley floor the maps show a stretch of surfaced cycle path: we have not verified its full length and route. The bus stop is on the regional road.

The drawback
No shop in the hamlet and the centre far away: without a car, daily life here is awkward. And around Christmas midday is in shade.
Who it suits
Who Ecche suits, and who it does not
It suits you if
- Anyone looking for quiet and space, who uses the car anyway.
- Anyone who comes from late January onwards and in summer: sun and an open horizon.
- Anyone who wants lifts and cross-country reachable on foot without living next to the lift station.
Look elsewhere if
- Anyone who wants services within walking distance.
- Anyone buying for the Christmas sun.
- Anyone looking for plenty of choice: the houses are few.
The drawbacks, stated
- Services far away: no shop in the hamlet, town hall and pharmacy in Bach.
- In December midday is in shade for some weeks, according to the calculation.
- December sun varies a great deal from one house to the next.
- In the lower part, towards the Piave, one site can be built on only after flood-safety works.
Prices
How the Italian Revenue Agency values this area
Ecche falls within the zone that the property market observatory (OMI) calls “peripheral”. For homes in the “abitazioni civili” category, in normal condition, the official value (second half of 2025) runs from €1,900/m2Source 1Agenzia delle Entrate – OMI, database of official property values: standard homes, normal state of repair, euros per square metre of gross floor area. Questions about Ecche
Is Ecche sunny or not?
For most of the year, yes, more than many hamlets in the centre. Not in December: according to our calculation Monte Siera covers midday from roughly early December to mid-January, and on 21 December the hamlet's map point receives about 2 h 50 min. It depends on when you will use the house.
How far is the centre?
The town hall in Bach is on the other side of the settlement: on foot it is a long walk, by car a few minutes. For everyday shopping you go to Fontana or Cima Sappada.
Are there new houses in Ecche?
In the listings we read in October 2026 there is a new-build development. We do not report prices or dates that are not ours and confirmed: for a property yet to be built, what counts is the specification, the contract and the protections laid down by law.
