Monte Ferro
The home mountain
Monte Ferro is the mountain Sappada has at its back: it stands to the north, very close, and the calculation gives it in view from all 15 hamlets. It shows the village its south side, the one that is lit in winter too. On the meadows below the wall there is a hut, under an hour's walk from Borgata Bach.

The home mountain
From the hamlets the summit is a couple of kilometres away as the crow flies and stands very high on the horizon: it is the nearest presence. Unlike the walls to the south, which the village sees from their shaded side, Ferro faces the houses with its sunny side: steep meadows, gullies, pale ridges. The rock is the same as that of the walls opposite: Triassic limestone and dolomite.
For anyone designing or choosing a house it is the second view: the one to the north, lit even in December, when to the south the walls stay in shade all day.
The name
The name refers to iron. A secondary source reports mining on the mountain and smelting at Forni Avoltri, and the village's 2026 summer programme included a talk on the mines of Monte Ferro. We have not found a primary source that tells that story in full: we mention it as a lead, not as a fact.
The hut
Rifugio Monte Ferro stands on the meadows below the wall. From Borgata Bach it is a tourist walk of under an hour, on a marked path; you can also reach it from Granvilla. The Alpine Club (CAI) describes the view from the hut thus: ‘the whole fine sequence of summits that runs from Terza Piccola to Cimon by way of the Clap, Siera, Creta Forata’. It is the balcony from which the entire southern chain can be read.
In winter the climb to the hut along the old ski run is one of the ski-touring routes indicated by the lift operator, facing south.
Higher up
From the hut path 141 continues to the Olbe lakes: it is one of the two classic ways to the plateau. On the normal route to the summit, however, the sources we have read say nothing: we do not describe it.
Computed on the terrain model
Which hamlets can see it
According to the calculation the summit is in view from every hamlet: it stands behind the village, close and high. It is one of the few summits that nobody in Sappada loses sight of.

Method: from the reference point of each hamlet, with the eye 6 m above the ground, on the 10 m terrain model (computed on 7 October 2026). ‘In view’ means that at least twenty metres of summit remain clear; ‘borderline’ means less than that is clear, or less than that is missing: there we make no claim. It holds for the centre of the hamlet, not for every house; trees and buildings are not taken into account.
Paths, with the figures from the route sheets

On foot from Borgata Bach, following the markers of path N3, or from Granvilla. Those who want to climb higher continue from the hut on path 141, or take path 140 from the village for Piani di Gront and Rifugio 2000.
