The threshold of Sappada Vecchia
Mühlbach
Milpa in the Sappada dialectHamlet of Sappada
Mühlbach, Milpa in Plodarisch, is the hamlet of the mill stream: here, at 1,243 m, the centre ends and Sappada Vecchia begins. It has the Cascatelle waterfalls, the Calvary, the schools and a small timber core on the edge of the gorge; the town hall and the shops are still a few minutes away on foot. It suits people who want the old road without moving away from services. The lower part, however, is on the regional road and gets less sun in December.

The sun here
Where the sun reaches Mühlbach from, and when
The ridge line you see is the real one, calculated from the centre of the hamlet. Above it are the sun's paths on the days that matter: where the line is solid the sun is in view, where it is dashed the sun has risen but is still behind the mountain.
On 21 December the sun reaches Mühlbach at about 10:30 and leaves at about 15:25: about 4 h 55 min of direct sun, under a clear sky.
Move your mouse or finger over the panorama, or use the slider beside it: you can read the direction, the height of the ridge, the peak, and the time the sun passes that way.
In words: from Mühlbach the highest stretch of ridge lies to the south-east, 25.2° above the horizon; the lowest to the east, 3.2°. To the south the ridge stands at 15.7°, and at midday on 21 December the sun climbs to 20°. At midday on that day the sun is in view. On 21 December it arrives at about 10:30 and leaves at about 15:25; on 21 June it stays in view from roughly 6:05 to 19:50.
Hours of direct sun, month by month
On the 21st of each month, under a clear sky, at the centre of the hamlet. The pale band is the day as it would be without mountains: the difference is what the ridge takes away.

- Across the 68 mapped buildings of the hamlet, direct sun ranges from 3 h 05 min to 5 h 05 min; the mid-point is 4 h 45 min. Here the figure changes a great deal from one house to the next: the range is what counts, not the single point.
- At midday the sun is in view all year round.
- What hides it longest is the ridge to the south-east, where Monte Siera stands: about 2 h 35 min.
The peaks in view from Mühlbach
According to the calculation: at least twenty metres of summit above the terrain in between. A wood or a nearby house can still hide them.

MethodA calculation, not a measurement: terrain model at 10 m, clear sky, the centre of the hamlet with the eye 6 m above the ground. Trees and buildings are not counted; times are rounded to five minutes and, where the sun skims a ridge, they can shift by ten to twenty.
Sources and details of the calculation
Times are Italian local time (summer time from late March to late October), calculated for the year 2027; the sun counts as present when the centre of its disc is above the ridge. On 21 September the sun's path is almost the same as on 21 March, an hour later by the clock. Calculated on 7 October 2026.

What Mühlbach is like
What kind of place it is
The name is that of the stream: Mühlbach, the mill stream. The mill buildings still exist, in many cases renovated, below the Cascatelle. The old core is high up, at the bend of the old road, on the edge between the gorge and the slope; from the 1930s the hamlet grew downwards, as far as the regional road.
The stream divides the village in two in everyday speech as well: those who live to the west, as far as Lerpa, are Dinnigar, “inside”; those who live to the east, as far as Cima, are Daussigar, “outside”. And here all the definitions of Sappada Vecchia agree: Mühlbach is part of it, and it is the starting point of the municipality's itinerary through the historic hamlets.
The hamlet has the Calvary of 1824, with the fourteen small chapels of the Way of the Cross, the school building of 1907, which served as town hall until 1953, and at the Cascatelle the Small Museum of the Great War, open in summer.
The sun: what the calculation says
On 21 December, according to our calculation, the hamlet's map point receives about 4 h 55 min of direct sun: it arrives at around 10:30, when it clears Monte Siera, and lasts until about 15:25. That is later than in Bach: from here on, going east, Siera keeps the mornings in shade for longer and longer. On 21 March the figure is about 10 h 40 min, the highest value among the fifteen hamlets on that date; on 21 June about 13 h 40 min.
In Mühlbach the difference between top and bottom is marked: repeating the calculation on the mapped houses, those in the lower part receive much less sun in December than those on the edge. The gorge of the stream, moreover, may add shade and damp: we have not measured it, and it has to be looked at house by house. The calculation is made on the terrain model, under a clear sky, without trees or buildings.
In front, the view opens on to Siera, the Clap group and the Terze.
The houses, and what comes up for sale
Three different things under the same name. At the top, a few timber buildings, of note, and the old mills. In the middle, the houses of the 1930s–1950s. At the bottom, along the regional road, more recent construction. The address “Borgata Mühlbach” covers all three: the houses stand between 1,209 m and 1,255 m, and it is worth asking where the one you are interested in actually is.
In the listings we read in October 2026 there is a historic building under complete renovation, from which a few apartments are being made: completion dates and energy classes written in listings are statements by the seller.
For the Italian Revenue Agency the “peripheral” zone begins at Mühlbach and runs as far as Cima Sappada: standard homes are valued between €1,900/m2 and €2,700/m2 (OMI, normal condition, gross floor area). “Peripheral” is the name of the band, not a judgement: it is the historic part of the village. A range is not the price of a house.
On foot from here
The primary and lower secondary schools are in the hamlet; pharmacy, food shops, town hall and post office are in Bach, a few minutes away. The Campetti nursery slopes are close by; the cross-country trail and the stadium, on the level ground to the east, can be reached on foot; the chairlift to Sappada 2000 starts from Kratten, a walk along the old road. The path to the Olbe lakes climbs from Mühlbach. The bus stop is on the regional road.

Altitude of the hamlet
The hamlet's point on OpenStreetMap, which falls on the lower part; the houses stand between 1,209 m and 1,255 m.
Direct sun on 21 December
Calculated on the terrain model, under a clear sky, for the hamlet's map point: trees and buildings are not taken into account. The lower part receives less.
On foot from here
- the primary and lower secondary schools, in the hamlet
- the Cascatelle, the Calvary and the Small Museum of the Great War
- pharmacy, food shops, town hall and post office, in Bach

- the path to the Olbe lakes
The drawback
Under the same address are the old core on the edge and the houses along the regional road: altitude, sun and noise are not the same.

Who it suits
Who Mühlbach suits, and who it does not
It suits you if
- Anyone who wants the old road and the centre a few minutes away.
- Families with children at primary and lower secondary school.
- Anyone who does cross-country skiing or takes children to the nursery slopes, and likes walking.
Look elsewhere if
- Anyone looking for a hamlet entirely in timber: here the historic buildings are few.
- Anyone who wants a chairlift on the doorstep.
- Anyone who does not want to deal with the regional road, if the house is in the lower part.
The drawbacks, stated
- The lower part of the hamlet is on the regional road.
- In December the houses at the bottom receive much less sun than those on the edge, according to the calculation.
- The gorge of the stream may bring local shade and damp: it has not been measured and should be checked on site.
- The timber buildings are few, and the protected ones carry the constraints of the historic zones.
Prices
How the Italian Revenue Agency values this area
Mühlbach falls within the zone that the property market observatory (OMI) calls “peripheral”. For homes in the “abitazioni civili” category, in normal condition, the official value (second half of 2025) runs from €1,900/m2Source 1Agenzia delle Entrate – OMI, database of official property values: standard homes, normal state of repair, euros per square metre of gross floor area. Questions about Mühlbach
Where does Sappada Vecchia begin?
At Mühlbach, according to all the sources we compared: it is the first of the historic hamlets on the old road, which continue as far as Puiche. The sources disagree on the number of hamlets; on the starting point they agree.
What are the Cascatelle?
The falls of the mill stream, in the hamlet. Next to them are the old mills and, in the former forge, the Small Museum of the Great War, open only in summer. The municipality's itinerary through the historic hamlets starts from there.
For the Revenue Agency Mühlbach is “peripheral”: is it worth less?
No, it only means that it is not in the band along the regional road. The OMI “peripheral” zone includes the whole of Sappada Vecchia and Cima Sappada. The official values are ranges estimated on sales in normal condition: they describe neither a restored historic house nor a new apartment.
Is it written Mühlbach, Muhlbach or Mulbach?
The official name is Mühlbach; it is often found without the umlaut, on maps too. In Plodarisch it is Milpa. They are the same place.
