Palù

Moss in the Sappada dialectMoos in GermanHamlet of Sappada

Palù, Moss in Plodarisch, is the lowest hamlet in Sappada: at 1,214 m, between the church of Granvilla and the town hall in Bach, along the regional road. It has shops, the nursery slopes and the snow park a few steps away, which is why families with small children like it. Its drawbacks are clear: almost nothing historic, the road outside the door and, in December, a morning that stays in shade for a long time.

The sun here

Where the sun reaches Palù from, and when

The ridge line you see is the real one, calculated from the centre of the hamlet. Above it are the sun's paths on the days that matter: where the line is solid the sun is in view, where it is dashed the sun has risen but is still behind the mountain.

On 21 December the sun reaches Palù at about 9:30 and leaves at about 15:10: about 3 h 55 min of direct sun, under a clear sky.

In words: from Palù the highest stretch of ridge lies to the north-west, 26.8° above the horizon; the lowest to the east, 3°. To the south the ridge stands at 17°, and at midday on 21 December the sun climbs to 20°. At midday on that day the sun is in view. On 21 December it arrives at about 9:30 and leaves at about 15:10; on 21 June it stays in view from roughly 6:00 to 20:15.

MethodA calculation, not a measurement: terrain model at 10 m, clear sky, the centre of the hamlet with the eye 6 m above the ground. Trees and buildings are not counted; times are rounded to five minutes and, where the sun skims a ridge, they can shift by ten to twenty.

Sources and details of the calculation

Times are Italian local time (summer time from late March to late October), calculated for the year 2027; the sun counts as present when the centre of its disc is above the ridge. On 21 September the sun's path is almost the same as on 21 March, an hour later by the clock. Calculated on 7 October 2026.

What Palù is like

What kind of place it is

The Italian name translates the Plodarisch one: Moss, in German Moos, is the marsh. The ground was once boggy. Palù is at the lowest point of the settlement: the houses stand between 1,204 m and 1,229 m, a few dozen metres below the hamlets on the old road.

Everyone's route passed through here. Before 1922 the old road climbed from Palù in a hairpin bend up to just below Pill; in the late nineteenth century, where there had been a staging post for changing horses, a hotel opened. Palù housed one of the village's three cooperative dairies, and in 1948 Sappada's first chairlift left from here, towards Monte Ferro: it no longer exists.

With the new road, today regional road 355, Palù became part of the centre: shops along the street, apartment blocks, and towards the Piave the meadows of the nursery slopes.

The sun: what the calculation says

This is the point on which it pays to be most precise. On 21 December, according to our calculation, the hamlet's map point receives about 3 h 55 min of direct sun, but not continuously: a first ray at around 9:30, for a few minutes, then shade again until late morning, when the sun comes out from behind Col dei Mughi and Monte Siera; from then it stays until about 15:10. The neighbouring hamlets, higher up, receive more in December.

The other side of the coin is summer: on 21 June the calculation gives Palù about 14 h 20 min, the highest value among the fifteen hamlets. On 21 March the figure is about 10 h 35 min.

These are figures calculated on the terrain model, under a clear sky, for one point: they take no account of trees or buildings, and in Palù the December difference between the highest houses and those nearest the Piave is large. If the house is for Christmas and New Year, it should be seen in those days.

What you see

To the south the Clap group, to the south-east Monte Siera, to the west and south-west the Terze; behind, Monte Ferro. Monte Peralba (2,694 m) cannot be seen. Being low down, Palù looks at the mountains from below and faces the wooded slope across the Piave, the one with the ski runs: it is a more enclosed view than that of the hamlets halfway up the slope. From a particular house what counts is what stands opposite, and here the buildings are close together.

The houses, and what comes up for sale

Apartments in twentieth-century buildings, mostly in apartment blocks; of the traditional fabric, a couple of houses and a few farm buildings remain. The land-use plan provides for two recovery plans in the hamlet, one of which concerns a ruined building to be rebuilt “strictly according to the original model”: we cannot say whether they have started.

For the Italian Revenue Agency Palù is in the “central” zone, with Granvilla, Pill and Bach: standard homes are valued between €2,000/m2 and €3,000/m2 (OMI, normal condition, gross floor area). It is a range estimated on completed sales, not the price of a house; asking prices in listings are a different measure.

In an apartment on the road, check which side the bedrooms are on, and ask whether the parking space is included and written into the deed: in the centre, in season, parking is scarce.

On foot from here

Palù is halfway between the church and the town hall, and the walking is on the level: a food shop, the optician and the sports shops are in the hamlet; the post office, pharmacy and town hall are in Bach, a few minutes away. The stop for scheduled buses is on the regional road. The village has a short golf course of 9 holes, based in the hamlet; in summer the square hosts part of the children's entertainment.

In winter

Below the houses, on the meadows towards the Piave, are the Campetti, the two drag lifts of the nursery slopes, and Nevelandia, the snow play park with tubes and sledges. Across the river the Eiben chairlift starts: Palù is the hamlet from which you reach it soonest on foot. For Sappada 2000, Pian dei Nidi and Monte Siera you use the ski bus, free for ski-pass holders, or the car.

In directories Nevelandia carries an address in Borgata Palù that corresponds to the main road, not to the park: do not use it to measure how far it is from a house.

The drawback

In December the morning in Palù is in shade for longer than in the neighbouring hamlets, and the lowest houses get less sun than the higher ones. Anyone buying for the end-of-year holidays should check it on site.

Who it suits

Who Palù suits, and who it does not

It suits you if

  • Families with small children: nursery slopes, snow park and shops without using the car.
  • Anyone who wants to walk on the level between home, church and town hall.
  • Anyone who uses the house mainly in summer, when the sun lasts longest here.

Look elsewhere if

  • Anyone buying for the Christmas sun: in December other hamlets have more.
  • Anyone looking for old timber or a historic core.
  • Anyone who wants to be off the regional road.

The drawbacks, stated

  • The regional road runs through the hamlet.
  • It is the lowest altitude in the village: in December full sun arrives late, especially on the houses nearest the Piave.
  • Almost nothing historic: a couple of traditional houses and a few farm buildings.
  • Scarce parking in season, as in the whole centre.

How the Italian Revenue Agency values this area

Palù falls within the zone that the property market observatory (OMI) calls “central”. For homes in the “abitazioni civili” category, in normal condition, the official value (second half of 2025) runs from €2,000/m2Source 1Agenzia delle Entrate – OMI, database of official property values: standard homes, normal state of repair, euros per square metre of gross floor area. Questions about Palù

Are Palù and Moos the same place?

Yes. Palù is the official name; in Plodarisch the hamlet is called Moss, and you also find it written Moos, the German way. All three mean “marsh”. In Sappada every hamlet has two names, and the municipal statute puts them on an equal footing.

Is Nevelandia in Palù?

It is on the meadows below the houses, between Palù and Bach, next to the Campetti drag lifts. It is a snow play park, open only in winter. The official address is in Borgata Palù, but it indicates the main road: the real distance from a house has to be measured on site.

Is it true that Palù gets little sun in winter?

Less than the neighbouring hamlets, according to our calculation, and especially in the morning: on 21 December about 3 h 55 min for the hamlet's map point, against about 5 h 20 min in Bach. The difference already narrows in January and is reversed in summer. It is a calculation without trees or buildings: the house has to be seen in person.

Can you walk to the slopes from Palù?

To the nursery slopes and the Eiben chairlift, yes. To the chairlifts of Sappada 2000 and Monte Siera, no: you take the ski bus or the car.
