Monte Lastroni

Above the lakes, on the wartime path

Monte Lastroni closes the Olbe plateau to the north. It is a hiker's summit: from the lakes you climb in an hour on a Great War path, among shelters and gun positions, and from the top the view is all round. It cannot be seen from the hamlets, with the sole exception of Lerpa: it stands behind the buttresses of the plateau.

What kind of mountain it is

It stands on the boundary ridge with Veneto, the one that runs from Ferro to Righile to Lastroni and on the other side looks down on Val Visdende. It is made of Triassic limestone and dolomite, like Ferro and like the walls south of the valley. On OpenStreetMap it also carries a German name, Scheibenkofel: a single source, to be confirmed.

The climb

Among the summits on these pages it is the only one with a route graded as a hiking path all the way to the top. From the Olbe lakes wartime path 138 climbs in an hour; starting from Sappada 2000 the tourist board gives two and a half hours. The true reckoning, however, starts from the village: the lakes are reached after about three hours of ascent, and so the summit of Lastroni is a full day, with a great deal of ascent.

The Great War

The path is a military mule track: along the climb and on the crest there remain shelters and gun positions. It is a piece of the front that ran along these ridges, the same of which you see the forts in Val Sesis and the positions around Rifugio Calvi.

The view

The Alpine Club (CAI) speaks of an all-round view. From the nearby Passo del Mulo, to give a documented example, you see Peralba, Chiadenis and Avanza to the north, and the lakes, the Clap, Siera and Creta Forata to the south: from up here Peralba, which is not there from the village, stands in front of you.

Computed on the terrain model

Which hamlets can see it

According to the calculation the summit is in view only from Lerpa, at the western end of the village, and only just. From all the other hamlets it is hidden by the slopes that climb towards the Olbe plateau.

From Bach, in the direction of the summit, the horizon is formed by a point on the slope at 1,898 m, 1.6 km from the houses.

Method: from the reference point of each hamlet, with the eye 6 m above the ground, on the 10 m terrain model (computed on 7 October 2026). ‘In view’ means that at least twenty metres of summit remain clear; ‘borderline’ means less than that is clear, or less than that is missing: there we make no claim. It holds for the centre of the hamlet, not for every house; trees and buildings are not taken into account.

Paths, with the figures from the route sheets

Getting there

You go by the Olbe lakes: from the village by Rifugio Monte Ferro and path 141, or up the Sappada 2000 ski run on path 135; from the lakes path 138 leads to the summit.

Frequently asked questions

Is Monte Lastroni difficult?

For those who are fit, no: from the Olbe lakes it is an hour on a hiking path. What is long is the climb to the lakes from the village.

Can Lastroni be seen from Sappada?

From almost nowhere: the calculation on the terrain model gives it in view only from Borgata Lerpa.
