From Munich to Sappada

From Munich to Sappada you enter from the north. After the Felbertauernstraße and Lienz you follow the Drava upstream to the border and San Candido (Innichen), then climb to the Passo di Monte Croce di Comelico (Kreuzbergpass) and descend into Comelico: from Lienz there are about 1 h 55 min left.

From Munich you go neither through Tarvisio nor over the Plöckenpass: the quickest way is the Felbertauernstraße, then Lienz and the Passo di Monte Croce di Comelico (Kreuzbergpass).

From Lienz to Sappada

From Lienz the B100 follows the Drava upstream to Sillian and the border. From San Candido (Innichen) the SS52 climbs through Sesto (Sexten) to the Passo di Monte Croce di Comelico, then descends to Padola and Santo Stefano di Cadore. The last kilometres are on the SR355, climbing along the Piave through the Acquatona gorge.

Where to stop

The natural stops are Lienz, Sillian, right by the border, and San Candido (Innichen), on the Puster Valley railway. After the pass, Santo Stefano di Cadore is the point where the road from Veneto also arrives. Beside each name you will find how much is left to Sappada.

What to know about this road

OpenKreuzbergpass

The Passo di Monte Croce di Comelico is the highest of the three ways into the valley. We found no scheduled winter closure, but official confirmation is missing: in heavy snowfall it may close for a few hours. In Austria the winter-tyre requirement starts on 1 November, in Italy on 15 November, and it lasts until 15 April.

The Felbertauernstraße is tolled, at each passage. Austrian motorways require a vignette: to know on which stretches of your route, we refer you to ASFINAG. In Austria the winter-tyre requirement starts on 1 November.

Without a car

No train reaches Sappada, and no airport has a direct link. The useful stations, the buses from Tolmezzo and from Calalzo and their limits are on the main distances page.
