A week in winter
In Sappada the pistes start from the village: 15 km declared between 1,245 m and 2,024 m, a snow playground for children and a cross-country loop of 13 km on the valley floor. The ski area is small: those who ski every day soon run out of it. In Tarvisio the kilometres are 24 km, there is night skiing and the cross-country network is far more extensive; the pistes, though, start from 754 m and rely on snowmaking. The regional ski pass is the same and is valid in both ski areas.
A week in summer
Summer in Sappada means walking: paths that climb from the valley floor to the mountain huts, the Olbe lakes, the source of the Piave, the hamlets of Sappada Vecchia to cross on foot. In summer only one lift runs. It is the season that weighs most: 54.9% of overnight stays. In Tarvisio summer is more varied and draws more foreign visitors: Monte Lussari with its gondola, the Fusine lakes, the Alpe Adria cycle route, and Villach about 30 min away.
Getting there
This is the sharpest difference. In Tarvisio the A23 motorway comes into town, and there is a station: about 80 min from Udine, 2 h 10 min from Trieste. For Sappada the motorway ends at Carnia and 53 km of valley road remain: about 1 h 50 min from Udine and 2 h 45 min from Trieste. From Venice the times almost level out (2 h 30 min and 2 h 35 min), because Sappada is reached by driving up from Cadore. The two are about 1 h 55 min apart.

Frequently asked questions
Where does the same sum buy more space?
At the mid-point of the OMI band, in Tarvisio: with €350,000 about 226 m2, against 140 m2 in Sappada. It is an order of magnitude, before taxes and costs, and it does not hold for new homes. At the asking prices in the listings the same budget buys less: about 134 m2 in Tarvisio and 98 m2 in Sappada.
Which of the two has seen valuations rise more?
According to OMI, in five years the mid-point of the band has risen by 17.6% in central Sappada and by 19.2% in central Tarvisio; in Sappada's outer zone by 43.8%. These are nominal changes: net of inflation, the two centres are roughly level. Asking prices in listings tell of another scale, and they are not sale prices. None of these figures says what will happen.
How far apart are Sappada and Tarvisio?
About 1 h 55 min by car, 105 km: they are two different valleys, not two sides of the same ski area. The regional ski pass, however, is valid in both.
